Florida Gators defensive back Brian Edwards is in custody after Gainesville police arrested him Monday night and charged him with first-degree misdemeanor battery.
Edwards remains in Alachua County Jail Tuesday. He was accused of grabbing his longtime girlfriend by her neck as she attempted to leave their apartment, according to a report.
The report stated Edwards’ girlfriend had marks on her neck, along with a scratch on her shoulder. A GPD officer did not note any other injuries after arriving to respond to a call from a witness about an alleged battery.
Edwards, 20, did not speak to officers after being read his rights.
A 6-foot-2, 205-pound junior from Hollywood, Edwards has played 18 games as a reserve and special teams player for the Gators. He has totaled seven tackles and four pass breakups.
Edwards remained a backup during spring practices, but he made strides, including a practice during which he had two interceptions.
