Late Friday night, attorney Michael Avenatti continued his crusade against Nike with a series of tweets. Avenatti, who was arrested by the Southern District of New York for alleged extortion late last month, accused Nike of paying Duke star Zion Williamson’s mother.
Avenatti alleged Nike made a bogus “consulting services” payment to Sharonda Sampson – the mother of Zion Williamson.
After Avenatti called out the Duke men’s basketball program on Twitter, athletic director Kevin White released a statement saying the school is looking into the matter.
“We are aware of the allegation and, as we would with any compliance matter, are looking into it. Duke is fully committed to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations,” White said in a statement.
