For what is at the very least the first time in public since his firing in 2000, legendary Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight is back on campus at Indiana.
Knight, 78, is at the Indiana baseball game with longtime friend and former sportswriter Bob Hammel. Knight had a speaking engagement in Indianapolis this week and has been in the Indy and Bloomington areas for several days.
Knight led IU to national titles in 1976, 1981 and 1987, among a host of accomplishments that made him one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time at any level. His 1976 national title team remains the last unbeaten team in major college basketball.
Knight's relationship with IU since his firing has been contentious at best — including well-document public comments. But IU continued to reach out and let him know he was always welcome to return, and the friendship between Knight and Hammel has always remained strong.
