Bill Belichick could assume Patriots’ defensive coordinator duties

Larry Brown Sports

Thursday’s surprising news that Greg Schiano was stepping down as the New England Patriots’ defensive coordinator seemingly has left the team in a hole and led to questions about who will fill the role. At least initially, there is some speculation that Bill Belichick will pull double-duty for the Patriots.

Both WEEI’s Ryan Hannable and The Athletic’s Jeff Howe speculated that since it’s so late in the offseason, Belichick may end up serving as defensive coordinator.

The Patriots went through last season without actually having an official defensive coordinator since Matt Patricia left for the Lions. Brian Flores called defensive plays last season, though he did not have the actual DC title.
