Jacob deGrom will collect his Cy Young this weekend at the BBWAA’s annual dinner in New York, but even with the clock ticking on the report date for pitchers and catcher, the Mets’ right-hander doesn’t have a contract extension. Brodie Van Wagenen said there has been no time limit put on possible discussions with the Mets’ ace, who is under team control through the 2020 season.
“We haven’t put a timeline on contract discussions with Jacob, or any of the players on our roster for that matter. But Jacob clearly is a guy that we value,” said the Mets GM, who was deGrom’s player agent until October. “He’s clearly a player we hope will be with us for a long period of time. And we have ongoing dialogue with him and his representatives on a variety of things, including his status with us going forward.”
Van Wagenen would not say if he thinks the Mets can lock down their best player long-term.
“I think we’ll continue to have that dialogue and see where it takes us,” Van Wagenen said.
