The Yankees finally found a taker for Sonny Gray. The pitcher is headed to Cincinnati with a new contract extension in hand after months on the trading block.
The final piece in the deal was Gray agreeing to a three-year contract extension beginning in 2020 that The Athletic reported is worth $30.5 million. Gray already is under contract for 2019 at $7.5 million.
The Reds also acquired minor league left-hander Reiver Sanmartin in the trade, sending the Yankees highly regarded second base prospect Shed Long and a 2019 competitive balance draft pick in return.
New York then flipped Long to the Mariners for outfield prospect Josh Stowers. Unlike Long, Stowers will not need to be on the 40-man roster, so that move combined with moving Gray clears a spot for the Yankees to make the Adam Ottavino signing official.
