The Edmonton Oilers have claimed centre Colby Cave on waivers from Boston, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports.
Call me an Oilers fan. Five minutes ago I’d never heard the name Colby Cave. Now I’m hoping he can plug the hole the Oilers have at the centre ice position, the one created when Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli traded away centre Ryan Strome for winger Ryan Spooner. And became I’m an Oilers fan of a certain vintage and wishful disposition, thoughts of Cave being the new Kevin McCelland immediately pop into my head.
To make way for Gave, the Oilers sent down Joe Gambardella to the AHL.
Cave is from the Bruins organization, so Asst. GM Keith Gretzky will know about his game.
Kyle Brodziak has been iffy as a fourth line centre and Jujhar Khaira is better on the wing than at centre, so if Cave can come in and add some solid defensive play and penalty killing at centre, he can help the Oilers.
