5-star ATH Bru McCoy announces commitment to USC over Texas at the All-American Bowl

Burnt Orange Nation

The dark horse finished second.

On Saturday afternoon at the Army All-American Bowl, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei product Bru McCoy brought his well-documented recruitment to a close on national television, and it’s a story that didn’t end favorably for Tom Herman, as the nation’s top-ranked athlete announced his commitment to the USC Trojans over the Texas Longhorns.

Though McCoy’s decision to stay home comes as disappointing news for Texas, the five-star California native’s choice wasn’t a surprising one.

Yes, Texas likely made this recruitment a little too close for comfort from the USC side, but there was never a time in which the Trojans weren’t overwhelmingly considered the team to beat.

Following his first trip to the Forty Acres in late April, the Longhorns staff began to craft and cultivate a relationship with the McCoy family, and the fruits of those labors were the Longhorns receiving one of McCoy’s official visits. Yet, despite McCoy being on hand to witness Texas celebrate a 37-14 win over USC and McCoy’s parents warming up to the idea of him leaving home to play for Herman, the momentum remained in favor of the Trojans, aside from a select pair of Crystal Ball picks.
