Long-time followers of college sports are well aware that polling is, at best, an inexact science. With that in mind, we deliver the news that Duke has overtaken Virginia for the No. 1 position in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll, in a week in which neither team actually took the court.
Virginia’s overall point total of 757 and first-place vote count of 11 remains the same as it was a week ago. But the Blue Devils, who trailed by just two poll points last week, picked up four more points in this poll, including a 10th first-place nod, to overtake the Cavaliers by two points.
This is the second reign at the top of the poll for Duke, which held the spot for one week in November before its only loss of the season to Gonzaga.
