Boston Bruins forward David Backes will have a hearing with NHL Player Safety for his illegal check to the head on Devils forward Blake Coleman during Thursday’s 5-2 Devils win at TD Garden in Boston.
Backes hit Coleman with 2:03 left in regulation when the Devils forward attempted to shoot the puck at the Bruins' empty net while holding a 4-2 lead.
Backes delivered a blow to Coleman’s head with his elbow, sending Coleman to the ice, where he stayed on a knee for a few seconds. Coleman stayed in the game and scored an empty netter moments later, sealing the Devils' victory. Backes was given a two-minute minor for the hit.
