One of the maroon and white’s best players in program history will suit up in those colors one final time on Jan. 1. Junior defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons has decided to declare for the 2019 NFL Draft.
The announcement came from Mississippi State football’s official Twitter account Thursday afternoon. For many, it was a matter of time before the Associated Press third-team All-American made his declaration official.
“For the past three years at Mississippi State, I have poured my heart into everything I did on the field, in the classroom and in the community,” Simmons said in his statement. “This place taught me to never give up, and it instilled a desire and work ethic to reach my ultimate goal.”
Simmons had 59 tackles this season, 15.5 of which were for a loss. He recently won the Conerly Trophy as the best collegiate football player in Mississippi. In Sports Illustrated most recent mock draft, Simmons went No. 11 overall to the Green Bay Packers.
