Top spenders Red Sox owe nearly $12 million in luxury tax

12 Up

The Boston Red Sox are your 2018 World Series champions, but the victory came at a literal cost.

Boston had the highest payroll in baseball last year, and because they went over the luxury tax threshold, they will have to pay a penalty of $11.95 million.

The only other team that has to pay the luxury tax penalty are the Washington Nationals, who owe $2.39 million.

Boston's team payroll was over $240 million last year, which is over $40 million over the tax threshold. Along with the nearly $12 million they have to pay, the Red Sox have also become the first team to experience the new penalty that was put in place last year.
