The time is drawing near for Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Matt Murray to show whether or not he’s got his game back in order.
Murray took part in a full team practice Tuesday for the first time since being sidelined with a lower-body injury on Thanksgiving morning.
He said he still has to consult with medical personnel before declaring himself ready to return to game action.
“But the progression is there,” Murray said.
Murray didn’t rule himself out for Wednesday night’s game with the Chicago Blackhawks. Either way, with the Penguins playing back-to-back home games this weekend, it seems clear his return is days, not weeks, away.
“Matt’s obviously an important part of this team. We’d like to get him involved as soon as we can,” coach Mike Sullivan said. “We know when he’s at his best, he’s our No. 1 goalie. We’re encouraged he’s as close as he is.”
When the Penguins announced last month that Murray would be out longer term, it came out of nowhere. Skeptics wondered if the team was simply giving Murray cover for a run of poor play.
