As Michigan State basketball rests, Tom Izzo doubles down on recruiting

Detroit Free Press

Finals week brings a time for rest and mental preparation for Michigan State’s basketball team.

Not so much for Tom Izzo.

Izzo and his staff went en masse to watch 2019 5-star prospects Isaiah Stewart and Keion Brooks play for La Lumiere School on Saturday night in an Indianapolis tournament, just hours after MSU wrapped up a tough 63-59 road win at Florida.

This week, Izzo’s travel plans take him to watch a few 2020 forwards: 4-star Cam'Ron Fletcher in St. Louis, and then 5-star Isaiah Jackson. Izzo also will see Rocket Watts, a 2019 MSU commitment and Jackson's teammate at SPIRE Academy near Cleveland.

"I’m kind of all over the place," Izzo said during his weekly news conference Monday. "And so we’re trying to practice in the morning, get through finals and be some long days for us but hopefully for the players they get a little rest. …

“I have to admit, it’s been hard because we’re in the middle of recruiting, too. I’m on the road a lot this week and still trying to practice, so it’s been a little different.”

For now, the end of the semester is somewhat a midpoint for No. 9 MSU, now 8-2 and off until Sunday’s home game against Wisconsin-Green Bay (5 p.m./Big Ten Network).
